About

AUTHOR

I believe that grammar/syntax/sentence structure can be seen in a new light. This is not a new teaching method, but a change in the way that we understand grammar itself (based on linguistics) to bring it to life for learners in a new way. I am an experienced linguist with expertise in both syntax and functional grammar, and a strong background in grammatical analysis. I have taught grammar and writing to children and English language learners, and grammar to linguistics undergraduates.

BOOK

The Richness of Grammar explains essential grammar in a way designed for learners. This book newly unlocks the world of grammar through three innovative ways of seeing it:

  • Bringing together the two sides of grammar: structure (syntax) and function (meaning and choice). A simpler, single picture that makes sense.
  • Beginning with the key foundations, and then building on those, for incremental learning and skill building.
  • Providing simple explanations for real understanding, alongside the (use-as-you-need) technicalities.

This is an ideal guide for teachers’ professional knowledge. After the foundations are presented, the remainder of the book sets out an organised inventory of grammatical patterns for systematic learning or ready reference. This is the essential background knowledge needed for any teaching approach. Includes plenty of examples, application suggestions and curriculum correlation.
